Always a debate, I always get one…knock wood, I never get the flu.  They are usually covered by insurance, but some places only take some insurance.  They are at a lot of locations, and what have you got to lose?

According to doctors, you cannot get the flu from a flu shot…for adults, at least, I think it’s a good idea.  Kids?  That’s your call.  This year the H1N1 is combined with the normal flu shot.  That was new to me.  Still gonna do it though!

I’ve seen shots available through VNA (visiting nurses association) CVS stores, Rite Aid stores, Walgreens and Tops.

Here’s to a healthy winter!

Speaking of Winter, do you get the feeling its going to be a rough one?  I don’t know, it just seems like summer was extra nice, but the squirrels started building nests in my yard early, and burying nuts earlier than usual.  I think we will be well into winter by Christmas instead of the January storms we normally get.  Hope I’m wrong…..

When Monday is a holiday, I’m completely messed up.  I have a headache, I can’t put two words together and it’s Tuesday not Monday.  Ugh, back to bed and start over maybe?

The long weekend was nice in that I got some long awaited chores done and feel like I accomplished a lot.

Back to working out today.  Screwed my knee up jogging in Ohio.  That’s what I get for running downhill.  It took 7 full days to heal!  I’m gonna try running tonight.

With the unveiling of the new iPhone this week, my thoughts wandered to how far things have come technologically just in my lifetime.

As a struggling radio guy in Northern Michigan back in my 20s, I’d DJ weddings and occasional parties to make ends meet. I would lug two huge speakers, stands, an amp, CDs, a huge stack of vinyl records, a mass of cords and adapters, a couple of turntables (exactly as pictured), two CD players, my mixing board and headphones to each event. It took about an hour to set up, another hour to tear down, and I shared the front seat of my Chevette with at least one of those huge speakers. At the end of the evening I was pretty tired, but a couple of hundred dollars richer for my troubles, so it all worked out.

Today, all those cases of records and CDs I lugged from event to event can be replaced by one iPod, and the size of the speakers I need today would be half the size they used to be back in the day, but putting out much fuller, more realistic sound.

An iPhone can download just about any song I would want in seconds, so if I were to go back to deejaying, I could handle just about any request on-the-fly. How amazing is that? My 20 year old self would be shocked, awed, and so very covetous of this technology!

Random Thoughts

  • New studies now indicate that eating blueberries helps reduce belly fat. A University of Michigan study found that obese lab animals who ate a blueberry-rich diet lost abdominal fat and experienced lower cholesterol and improved glucose control, whether they ate a fat-rich diet or not. Yesterday I ate a 2 pound container of blueberries for lunch. So far, same amount of belly fat, but I am hopeful.
  • Now that the TV season is over, and Lost is over for good, all I have to watch at the moment is Friday Night Lights. Still a great show, but I can’t wait for this Sunday’s True Blood premiere. Check out the Season 3 teaser here!
  • With vacation season here, a health tip for you: carry disinfectant wipes and clean your hotel’s light switches, TV remote, telephone, light fixtures and faucets. According to a recent study those are the 5 germiest things in a hotel, since they’re never cleaned! Wipe them down first, and you could stave off a cold – or worse – in your Summer travels.

    Negative Ions

    Posted in: Health

It’s been a few days since we got back from our all too brief Florida vacation. This would have been posted sooner, but it took me this long to get un-buried from all the work that piled up when I was gone!
It wasn’t hot during our week by the gulf, but I will take sunny and around 70 in February any day, especially during this especially difficult winter! And not just the weather has been difficult.

In addition to all the depressing news stories of late, I made an unpleasant discovery in our basement right before we left. After an ice cold shower Saturday morning, I went down to check the water heater, and found shin-high ice cold water everywhere. Computers and boxes were floating, furniture was ruined, it was completely unexpected.

I think it was a power surge right before all the snow melted in our yard during an unseasonably warm spell. Our poor sump was overwhelmed. After I unplugged and reset it, it only took a few hours for the water to subside, but the damage was done.
I learned a lot about re-lighting pilot lights that cold, miserable weekend.
Needless to say, it was GREAT to escape to the beach for a while and forget things. Returning to work, even though I was majorly behind, didn’t seem quite as overwhelming, thanks to our time by the Gulf. Sunshine and negative ions truly do refresh the soul.
Did you ever wonder why you always feel refreshed after breathing ocean air? Here’s why, according to WebMD:

Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions are believed to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy.
There’s a reason so many people retire to Florida!

We had a wood-burning stove when I was a kid, and one of my duties was to split bigger logs into smaller pieces, and stack it against the house. I kind of enjoyed the work, actually, and it’s given me a freakish ability even now to wield a carnival hammer and ring the bell.
I’m not that big of a guy, reasonably tall and (until recently) pretty thin, but I could always ring that bell and impress those around me. Last weekend, however, it was different. We took the kids to Darien Lake and they wanted an inflatable alien, so I figured I’d ring the bell and win one for them. Here’s how it went down:
    Swing one……95%
    Swing two……96%
Swing three…..Brian pulls a muscle in his stomach! Doh!
Never in my life have I injured an ab muscle. Very embarrassing. When I swung that hammer on the third try, I reached for a little something extra, but pulled something really wrong instead.
It sounds kind of funny now, but at the time I was in major pain. On top of that, pollen was in the air everywhere, and when I sneezed it felt like my stomach was going to explode. (Thankfully, it didn’t. )
Well, I’m fully recovered, thank goodness, but in case any listeners were there and saw a guy, carrying a green inflatable alien, clutching his left stomach all day at Darien Lake, yeah: that was me.
