Did you notice that?  Everything you want to to ends up being on the same night!  I had a friends wedding the night of Ryan Star at the Hard Rock.  I worked at a bar the night of the Ed Kowalczyk show at the square and tonight is both Corks and Forks which I usuall host to benefit the Heritage Centers, and Pinktober starring Five For Fighting!  Ugh!

So last night I went to see Cirque Du Soleil’s Dralion!  I loved it!  I’ve seen other cirque shows…some bad, some great, this is worth it!  Lots of eye candy, bending in impossible ways and singing that gave me the chills!  Go see it!

This weekend, hoping to get a visit from my mom and brother and happy 19th birthday to my son Mikey…..seems like you were just…oh nevermind

We’ve all had different experiences with various airlines.  I think it all depends on what crew is serving you, from the gate attendant to the pilots.  The face they put on, the way they act, determines what you think of their airline.  On that note, check out America’s Meanest Airlines, according to U.S. News and World Report.

It seems like Taylor Swift is EVERYWHERE this week, on with us on Monday at Noon with the “Taylor Swift Radio Takeover,” on with David Letterman, and she’ll be at Madame Tussaud’s New York City Wax Museum to unveil her new wax statue which is decorated with over 2,000 Swarovski Crystals (a sneak peak above).

Yve was voted off last Wednesday on Survivor. I was sad to see that as I was rooting for her to win – she was such a nice player. But nice doesn’t always help win Survivor.

I talked with her this morning about why she was voted off and who she blamed right after watching it on TV (you’ll be surprised by that if you haven’t heard about it already).

She also talked about some of her tribemates, including NaOnka’s vicious confessionals and Dan’s laziness.

Here’s the full 6-1/2 minute interview (portions aired on Star 102.5).

I always love talking to Linda Hastreiter from Buffalo’s Iron Island Museum. Every year I invite her on Star 102.5 and she always brings along the coolest EVP’s from the museum.

EVP’s are the sounds ghosts make on tape. You usually don’t hear them when you’re recording. But when you play it back, they’re there. Strange. I record tons of stuff at the station and that never happens to me there, so why at the museum does this occur? Maybe electronic equipment is a way ghosts can communicate with us.

She’s got a whole new batch from the past year and some of them are kind of spooky – perfect for the week leading up to Halloween.

Hear the EVP’s in the full 11-minute interview with Linda (portions aired on Star 102.5). This online version includes three extra EVPs that didn’t air (along with the two that did).

If you have trouble with the clip pausing too much, right click to download it to your computer and it’ll run smoothly.

See the Iron Island Museum featured on Discover Channel’s Ghost Lab Thursday, November 11th at 10pm (or possibly the week after).

And don’t forget to visit the Iron Island Museum and try to get your own EVP’s. Overnight hunts are available by reservation year-round. Or check out some of these upcoming events (visit the museum website for more info and to make reservations)…

  • 10/28/10 (Thursday) – Candlelight Ghost Tour at 7pm
  • 10/29/10 (Friday) – Candlelight Ghost Tour at 7pm
  • 10/30/10 (Saturday) – Buffalo Paranormal Investigators event from 7pm – 2am

Also see more on the Iron Island Museum Facebook group.

Yesterday, I did a live broadcast from the Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence.

This was the first year I’ve gone to this giant event. I was stunned at how much there is to do in addition to the 5-acre corn maze!

There’s a bunch of amusement park rides (which everyone knows I love), pig races, tractor & horse-drawn hayrides, a petting zoo, magic show, singing chickens, giant pumpkins, tons of food, a massive pumpkin cannon, and more.

The event continues today and then ends after next weekend. If you’ve got kids, this is the perfect place to take them – they’ll have a blast.

Yesterday was especially fun because while I was there, they gave away a West Herr Toyota Corolla! It’s always cool when my workday involves someone winning a car.

Here’s a short video of some the Great Pumpkin Farm activities…

I love looking out my window and seeing the different colored leaves, blue sky peaking through and the sunshine that bathes it all.  I love warm sweaters and cute boots.  I love the crisp air and the smell of Fall that reminds me of being a child.  I love the anticipation of a snowstorm and a nice warm meal in the oven.  I love the hot radiators in my 1926 house.  I love my cats that run to lay on them.  I love Chrysanthymums and pumpkins on the front porch and I love WNY in Fall.

Fall has always been my favorite season. There is something about that first chill in the air, wondering if this will be the last lawn mowing of the season, or if the leaves will still be on the trees next weekend, that makes us stop and savor the brilliant colors, and the beauty around us, especially here in Western New York.

It’s that balancing act between summer and winter that makes fall so poignant: we never know just how long it will last. But more than anything it’s the smells of fall that bring it home for me; the sweetness of the leaves crunching underfoot, of apples ripening in the sun, and bonfires springing up everywhere. We cherish what little time we have left with the sun still relatively high in the sky.

It’s that desperate need to keep fall alive that inspired this poem, “Breath Of Autumn.”

A wonder in the air tonight
As potent as a young boy’s memory
What lungs can hold autumn?

A sweet fall fragrance
Of moist earth
And passing leaves
A bite, a nip, a hint
of what
I’m not ready for

To hold this
To breathe this
fleeting sweetness

Postpone tomorrow
Freeze

But cold, crisp, unbidden
It will come

The night is changed
A breath of autumn remains

Friday night is Mary Poppins with the hubby!  Don’t know how I roped him into that!  I hear its really good.  If its not we can sneak out!

Saturday morning takes us the the Elmwood/Bidwell farmers market!  Been going every week.  I’m looking for some different color beets and maybe some squash.  Definately Brussel Sprouts!

Saturday afternoon-clean the house so my husband and I can stop sneezing from our cats.  Its getting worse.  But I actually like to clean my house!  Go figure.  Saturday night chill at home, drink some wine and watch the telly.

Sunday mornings we usually go to our favorite new restaurant.  Bertha’s on Hertel  Its a diner where they make home made food and are only open 7am to 2pm….Best corned beef hash and eggs benedict I’ve ever had.  Then we will chill for a few and I’ll start using plastic to cover the windows in my attic….I feel like it works so….anything to save money wih those crazy heating bills.

Halloween decorations are up and we are on our way!

To Ryan Miller…it looks like the NHL didn’t listen to your call for “changing the culture” for the blind-side hit on Jason Pominville by Niklas Hjalmarsson in Monday nights Sabres/Blackhawks game for a “serious” punishment.  I know most of the national media (ESPN) was behind your plea, but the ultimate NHL “punishment” for Hjalmarsson was a joke!  Check out what Ryan said http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=540333&navid=DLBUFhome

It’s been a while since my last Cheap Fun Wines post, mainly because I hadn’t, until now, been able to beat any of the wines I wrote about previously (Menage A Trois, Earth Zin and Fire, Garnacha de Fuego). But recently I came across several that are worthy of consideration.

Having been to Napa, I know the difference between a bottle of wine that you store for years and save for a very special occasion, and a bottle you break out and have with pizza or burgers. This series highlights the everyday wines that may not impress your wine snob friend, but will probably please everyone else.

I saw Apothic Red at Global and picked up a bottle, since my wife and I have been enjoying red blends lately. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with a California red blend, and this was no exception.

I knew it was a winner when I opened the bottle to wonderful smells of dark cherries, blackberries, and a hint of spice. Made by the Gallo family, this is a blend of 45% Syrah, 44% Zinfandel, 9% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that comes from primarily Lodi, as well as Sonoma, and California’s Central Coast.

Often a wine of this price (around $10) will taste good at first but leave you with a strange aftertaste. Apothic finishes with a silky/velvety texture that lingers at the back of your throat in a very pleasant way. If you’re looking for a smooth, easy drinking, fruit-forward wine with hints of vanilla, this is one to try. Even Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate gave it an 87, calling it a “beauty (that) will provide enormous relief for weary, recession-challenged wine consumers.”

Break this bottle out at a party and I guarantee your friends will ask what it is, and how they can get a bottle for themselves.
