Everyone is talking about this year’s mediocre Idol season, and how it’s been reflected in the ratings.  Here’s a nice update from The Hollywood Reporter.  For the record, I think it’s pretty crazy to say Idol is over.  They set the bar super high in terms of viewership, and drop-offs should be a surprise to no one, no matter how bad the finalists were.  I do believe that next year is THE crucial year for Idol.  It’s the best produced show on TV, and if anyone can snap themselves out of a funk, it’s the AI team.  But they have one season to do it.

First, here’s the link to the details on the extra 13 minutes of the Lost finale scenes.

Now the new stuff for Darien Lake…

The park has made a bunch of cool changes for the 2010 season.

In addition to the giant waterpark expansion which opens this weekend (Splashtown at Darien Lake), they’ve also added a new show to the Galaxy Theater.

It’s called Sea Lion Splash and starts this weekend. It even includes a pool in front of the theater where you can photograph the sea lions after the show. Find out more on the Darien Lake website.

There will also be the Kris Allen free in-park concert this Sunday. And there’s been a few awesome changes to some classic rides…

  • VIPER: It’s back to it’s original color! Plus another little on-ride surprise.

  • CORN POPPER: The original name returns (previously the Rodeo Roundup). Corn Popper describes this ride so much better, so I’m happy the name is back.
  • SLEIGHRIDE: A new light package and another fun surprise.
  • ALL ROLLER COASTERS: New rider announcements (which me and Kiss’ Shannon Steele are VERY psyched about). :)

If you’re going on a road trip and looking for an amusement park to visit, don’t forget to check out my giant list of amusement parks with park links, what’s new for 2010, and distances from Buffalo…

A yearly tradition for my wife and I is our anniversary weekend across the border at Niagara-On-The-Lake. Before I came to Western New York, I had no idea there were even vineyards and wineries here. The fact that there are world class wineries, incredible chefs with five star restaurants, and an internationally recognized theater company just minutes from my house is a secret that more people need to know about!

I always take my show on the road to kick off the Shaw Festival Theatre season. I have come to know many of the people responsible for making the Shaw such an amazing operation, and every year I seem to learn something new about it. For example: did you know that Queen Elizabeth herself dedicated the Festival Theatre complex in 1973? And from very humble beginnings in 1962, the Shaw now plays to over 300,000 people every year. That’s a pretty remarkable number, considering NOTL has only 15,000 year round residents.

After my event on Friday, Heather and I stayed at the Sterling Inn and Spa. Regular listeners of mine know we often give away One Tank Getaways here, and this time I was lucky enough to take one of my own. If you have never been, I would seriously recommend taking advantage of one of the packages they offer. I challenge you to find a more luxurious experience for so little money! Plus you’re within walking distance of the Falls, with free parking – that alone is worth the trip.

First we had one of the finest dinners of our lives at A.G. which is located right at the hotel. I had been hearing great things about chef Cory Linkson for years, but hadn’t had the chance to experience his genius first-hand until now. Heather and I have had some amazing meals in our lives, but Friday’s dinner ranks at or near the top. It was 7 courses, with a specific Ontario wine paired with each course. What made the dinner so memorable to me was the interesting food pairings and textures. For example, I would never think to put scallops, lentils, and chorizo (mexican sausage) together, but Cory did it, in an incredibly delicious way. I was blown away, even more so because everything on the menu was locally produced. There truly is something about fresh, local ingredients that makes your dinner experience that much better.

We floated happily away from dinner and checked into our suite. It was huge, clean, ultra-modern, and absolutely perfect. You really can’t beat an in-room jacuzzi; and I hated to leave the extra-large multi-head shower Saturday morning, but there were wineries to visit, so off we went.

Our weekend coincided with the Wine and Herb Festival in Ontario Wine Country, and we had passports which let us take part in special food and wine pairings at each winery we visited. We decided to focus on ones we hadn’t visited already, and were pleasantly surprised by Palatine Hills Estate Winery, which we found mostly by accident on our way out of town, by way of Lakeshore Road.

Hard to believe it’s been 14 years of marriage to my beautiful wife, but I’m happy to say we still have fun together after all these years, and there was plenty to be had during our anniversary weekend in beautiful Ontario.

I can hardly stand the wait!  I want to relax, party with my friends, clean my car, finish laying my mulch in my yard….I just want to get it started….Can’t believe its only Thursday.  Ugh!

So I have about 3 parties to go to.  Here is my go to recipe.  Everyone asks for the recipe after they eat it!

Cool Cucumber Pasta Salad

  • 8 ounces uncooked penne pasta
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 medium cucumbers, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1-1/2 cups Domino® or C&H® Granulated Pure Cane Sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • Directions:

Cook pasta according to package directions; drain and rinse in cold water. Place pasta in a large bowl; stir in the oil, cucumbers and onion.
In a jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine the remaining ingredients; shake well. Pour over salad; toss to coat. Cover and chill for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Serve with a slotted spoon. Refrigerate leftovers. Yield: 8-10 servings

We’ve all been talking about the Lost finale in the building this week.

My theory that they all died when the plane originally crashed (right at the start of the very first episode) made sense thanks to that final scene with the crash footage minus the people (which was shown over the final credits Sunday night).

Brian Demay insisted that wasn’t actually a part of the story. And then this morning, I got this e-mail from him…

Hmmm. Well up until I read this article from Entertainment Weekly my theory made sense (at least to me).

Turns out that final scene was added to the end of Lost by the network to make the transition to the evening news easier. Because apparently plane crash footage is far more comforting than someone closing their eyes (in the network’s mind at least).

So knowing now that the producers had nothing to do with that final plane crash scene, I guess what Christian Shephard said really is the explanation. Which kind of saddens me – I liked the idea that they were all dead right from the beginning. It all seemed to flow together better that way.

I’m sure it’ll make total sense when I rewatch it all someday.

So for all those that responded to my original post, here you go…

I was wrong. You were right.

There’s a bunch of Lost theories floating around trying to explain what happened on the finale. These seems to be the ones that make the most sense…

    • 1 – They all came together in the church after their death (whenever that might have been) to pass over together. This is easily the most popular theory and yes, this is what Christian Shephard was talking about.

    • 2 – They all died when Oceanic flight 815 crashed. The island and everything that followed was just a test to determine where they would end up in the afterlife. This seems to be the second most popular theory (Whoopi even talked about it on-air today, so there must be something to it).

    • 3 – They all (or at least most of them) died when the atomic blast occurred at the end of season five. This was from a listener that called in on the request line today. It does make sense – except for the people that were in the future at the time.

Click on the Lost logo above for the Dark UFO site which has even more theories for the final episode. There’s some crazy ones and not so crazy ones there. The way I see it, it’s all in how you put it together in your own mind. Everyone’s theory is right then.

Whether you’re happy or not that the Lost writers didn’t just definitively answer everything for us, you’ve got to give them credit. Ending the show the way they did has kept people talking about it even when it’s no longer on-air.

And as for that second theory, I’ve found someone else who agrees with me. Sadly, they didn’t attach their name to the article.

One thing I’m pretty sure of – I’ll definitely be rewatching the entire series again someday. And knowing how it ends while watching it might result in a completely different theory on what happened.

Finally, to see a video of all the unanswered Lost questions AND to find out why Mr. Eko was not on the finale, visit my other page here (I attached it to the end of the post).

*** If you haven’t seen the finale and don’t want the ending to be completely spoiled, read no further! ***

It’s rare that a TV show actually gets to do a true final episode. And it’s even more rare when the producers actually use that chance to wrap up the entire series. But luckily, both of those things happened with Lost.

Not every mystery was solved and that’s okay with me. I’d rather still have some things left to the imagination. But I was very happy with the biggest mystery of all being answered and I think the explanation they gave was the only one that made sense. So I loved the finale.

My favorite scene in the finale: the final one (after his eye closing) where they showed the plane crash with no survivors. That was a cool way to end the series.

    Now the confusing stuff.

The final revelation made the flash forwards from seasons 4 & 5 pretty much useless. They were still a part of the overall story, but I would have rather seen more island stories than those.

One thing that did annoy me with the resolution is the fact that all the characters who died in the plane crash were interacting with people who were still alive in the flash-sideways. There’s no way all the people they dealt with in the hospital, police department, etc. were also dead. So that doesn’t make any sense. In the flash forwards, that was okay because that was apparently just all in their minds anyways (like their lives on the island). But that couldn’t be the case with the flash-sideways.

And I’m guessing characters like Frank Lapidus and Miles (who were on the plane that left the island but weren’t from the original plane crash) managed to return home safely with no memories of the others from the island since no one survived that initial plane crash. Maybe they were never even there and were just imagined characters.

This is now officially getting too confusing for me for a Monday.

Luckily, one mystery I was wondering about after the finale was answered during the Jimmy Kimmel show last night. Michael wasn’t in the church because he was still one of the lost souls / voices on the island (that’s what the actor who played Michael thought and I agree with that). Maybe that’s where Walt was too.

A two-hour edited version of the final episode is scheduled to air Saturday night at 8pm with the Jimmy Kimmel “Aloha To Lost” special right after it at 10pm on ABC. The online Q&A with Jimmy Kimmel and the Lost cast can be seen on the ABC website.

Then get ready for the final season DVD on August 24th!

Here’s the Hollywood Reporter article detailing Lost’s finale being it’s highest rated show in two seasons, and the wide range of reviews by the usual suspects.  Great reading!

Now that I have had a few hours to let the Lost series finale sink in, I’m torn. I feel uplifted, because ultimately it was a happy ending. But I also feel sad; that the series is over, certainly, but sadder still that so many questions about Island mythology will remain unanswered. More about that later.

(Spoiler alert…do not read further if you haven’t watched the finale yet…)

Emotionally, I thought the finale tied everything up in a neat bow. It was wonderful to see most everyone paired up with the ones they loved the most at the end. The Jack-Kate-Sawyer love triangle was finally resolved in a satisfying way, and Sawyer and Juliet finding each other again is what we all wanted to see. My wife and I shed a lot of happy tears throughout the 2.5 hour extravaganza.

It was also brilliant how the producers were able to explain Sideways World. For six seasons they have been denying that the Island has anything to do with Purgatory. Technically, that is true: the Island didn’t have anything to do with Purgatory. That Sideways World was, indeed, a Limbo/Purgatory was a brilliant way for them to hide a key plot point, in plain sight! A loophole, if you will.

I went into the finale thinking the writers were going to merge Sideways World and the Island with some sort of nifty physics explanation by Daniel Farraday which included a lot of math scribbled in his little notebook, and possibly featuring Desmond as the catalyst – but this worked a lot easier than that. It also allowed them to include some beautifully shot flashback moments between the characters that put a satisfying emotional finish to this very special series.

While I enjoyed seeing Sayid reunited with Shannon, it was also a bit puzzling, since he spent his entire life pining for Nadia. I had almost forgotten their island romance, to be honest. That Shannon is Sayid’s one true love, after having spent so little time together, seemed a bit contrived. But, it was a nice way to reunite her with the cast and bring her brother Boone back for the finale, so I guess that’s why it happened.

The classic good vs. evil, Jack vs. MIB/Locke battle wasn’t as momentous as I expected; no black smoke coming out of Locke’s body at the end, but it got us to where we wanted to go. And seeing the True Locke forgiving Ben on his way into the church at the end was a nice touch.

I read so many Facebook status updates last night quoting Miles: “I don’t believe in a lot of things, but I believe in duct tape.” And speaking of Miles, “Welcome to the club,” he said plucking a gray hair from the head of a startled Richard Alpert. Looks like Richard’s immortality died with Jacob.

As usual, lots of religious allusions. Kate’s comment to Desmond outside the church: “Christian Shephard? Really?” And Locke on Jacob’s choice of Jack: “I expected to be more surprised. You’re kind of the obvious choice, don’t you think?” Not to mention Jack dying from a stab wound in his side, and checking that wound, ala Doubting Thomas.

I truly loved that the series ended as it began six years ago, with Jack lying down at the edge of the beach, near the bamboo forest. It was also sweet that Vincent, the dog, lay down with him at the end so he wouldn’t be alone, and seeing the Ajira Airways plane leaving the island reflected in Jack’s eyes was a fitting, and poetic end. I commend Lost for going out in style.

Questions…Questions….Questions….But what about the Island? What the heck is really at the bottom of that Spring? Who put it there? Will we ever really know?

What is with the ancient Tunisia/Island connection?

The statue, the hieroglyphics; what about all that, Lost producers?

Why does poor Aaron have to spend eternity as a baby? Just sayin’…

The chalice of wine that Jacob drank from with his “mother” when he took over guardianship of the island involved some sort of ritual chant. Jacob also chanted something, although it was less involved, when he gave Jack the cup to drink. Poor Hurley drank muddy puddle water out of an old water bottle, no chanting, barely any ritual significance. But the implication in the finale’s church scene was that he had a long and successful Island stewardship with Ben as his #2. So….what was with all the chanting? Geez.

Where is Locke’s love connection? The poor guy “moves on” alone, with all the people who didn’t exactly make his time on the Island a totally pleasant experience. His revelation, the key life moment which brought back his Island knowledge, was seeing his toes wiggle. That seems a little unfinished to me, for such a key character in the series.

Perhaps, we will get some explanations this August. Entertainment Weekly says a complete series DVD set with close to 2 hours of additional material will address many Losties questions. That will drop Tuesday, August 24, so look for it then in a video store near you.

I’d love your comments, so feel free to post your thoughts. Did you love it? Hate it? Let me know!

Soooo excited to get out and play in the dirt…gonna mow tonight….Then if it rains Saturday, do my inside chores…then Sunday woo hoo!  Plant in the ground.  My color theme for my gardens this year is purples…lovin it!

Tried to think yesterday of what my favorite flower is….I am stumped.  I love the smell of lilacs and hyacinths…the stunning beauty of Oriental Poppies…Then there are all the annuals!  I can’t do it.  That would be like picking just one wine…not gonna happen!

Excited to hear next Thursday-who is coming to Thursdays at the Square!  Summertime in Western New York!

I barely even took the camera around. Most of the weekend was spent eating, walking around Main Street, and eating some more with friends and family. But here’s a few pictures I did take…

I had a S’mores crepe here – mmmmmm. The bobsled in front of the place definitely caught my attention.

A cool building on Main Street.

Three Olympic venues in one here. Up close is the outdoor speed skating rink. Off to the far right is the ski jumping complex. And way out is the Mount Van Hoevenberg area with the luge / bobsled / skeleton track (that’s where I’ll be spending quite a few weekends this coming winter).

Some fun things to do when visiting Lake Placid…

GOLD MEDAL ADVENTURE: A three-hour family summer program where you learn about the sports of luge & bobsled by actually trying them (on wheeled sleds) along with tours of the ski jump tower and the Olympic training complex.

BOBSLED EXPERIENCE: Go down the bobsled track with a professional driver and brakeman (in a sled with wheels during the summer – in the winter, the real thing with the sled on blades).

SKELETON EXPERIENCE: This is a winter only thing. You go down the track from Start 5. You’re on the sled going down the track head-first, on your stomach, and on your own!

GOLD MEDAL GAMES – FAMILY EDITION: Another winter only thing. A friendly family Olympic competition including curling, hockey, skiing, bobsled, speed skating, and more. The 2011 dates aren’t up yet, but keep checking.

Make sure to check the websites for height and age restrictions for some of these programs.

The groundswell of support and slightly higher ratings have allowed NBC to renew Chuck. On the downside, “Heroe’s” has officially been canceled. Check out NBC’s just released Fall schedule here.

On Friday, I came home to the mess pictured below in and around Penny’s crate.  Come to find out, she ate a Magic Eraser. We think. How did she get it, when did she get it, were not quite sure. But it freaked us out a bit!

My brother, who works right across from the airport, shot this when Air Force One landed.
