First of all congratulations to TEAM CANADA in winning GOLD in Vancouver (and a very successful 2010 Winter Olympics).  Truthfully not many, including me, thought TEAM USA would win SILVER (or even be in the Medal Round at all in these games).

It does seem Sidney Crosby likes to spoil parties, like at the biggest attended NHL game ever back in 2007 (I’m sure you remember that one) and again in the Gold Medal Game too, but Ryan Miller showed the world he has nothing to be ashamed of…being awarded Olympic Series MVP.  Let’s hope Ryan’s successful Olympic run will carry over for the Sabres for the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs!

The Olympic anchors on NBC and CTV are absolutely amazing and definitely deserve recognition.

It’s a tough call picking favorites because they’re all good. For some Winter Olympics, there’s been anchors that I haven’t really liked, but that’s not the case this year.

I’ve been watching CTV every morning. It’s been anchored by Beverly Thomson and Jay Onrait. What a great morning show it’s been because of them. NBC can’t even compete here.

At night, it’s just a matter of who’s covering what sport when. But I’ve really been loving the Canada-themed stories that Mary Carillo has been doing. So far, her dog sledding “Mary’s Moment” has been my absolute favorite.

With that said, here’s my favorite anchors of the 2010 Winter Olympics…

BRONZE – Bob Costas, NBC – He always does a great job bouncing between the different events without stopping the momentum.

SILVER – Brian Williams, CTV – A phenomenal Olympic anchor who seems to be having the time of his life. It makes it even more fun to watch when you know the anchor is having a great time too.

GOLD – Mary Carillo, NBC – You can tell Mary’s also having a blast – both in studio and throughout her pre-taped segments. In addition to the NBC late night anchoring, her Mary’s Moments where she explores the wonders of Canada are priceless. That’s where Mary is really at her best. And her sign-off the other night was awesome – she had a deep conversation with the studio moose as the late night coverage ended – too funny!

The #2 American sled had a crash in the 50/50 curve yesterday during the second run. Everyone was physically okay luckily and they’ll continue to compete today.

I can’t believe how many sleds are crashing on this track. I think it’s making the Bobsled, Luge, and Skeleton events less fun to watch. No one wants to see the athletes putting their lives at risk. And we all know this track is the reason the Olympics got off to it’s worst start ever this year.

So hopefully, today will be crash-free and it will be all about the start times and the expert driving as it should be.

And speaking of experts, the #1 US sled with Buffalo’s Steve Mesler is in first place after two runs! And they’ve got a lead of 4/10th’s of a second going into run three – that’s a big lead for Bobsledding!

The third heat of Four-Man Bobsleigh (yeah, that’s all the official wording there) is at 4:00pm Eastern time with the final heat following at approximately 5:40pm. I’m sure that final run will air in primetime.

As you watch, do you ever wonder how they steer the bobsleds? Visit HowStuffWorks.com to find out.

And just for fun, here’s some footage of the original Jamaican Bobsled Team from 1988. Considering how bad the Whistler track is, maybe it’s good they didn’t make it into the Olympics this year…

I watch the freestyle skiing events and can’t believe these athletes can do all those flips in the air and then still manage to land on their feet and ski down the rest of the hill.

One thing they probably don’t worry about during those flips is actually losing their skis mid-jump. That’s what happened to this ski jumper (who at the end of the video walks down the hill and seems understandably annoyed)…

The pickle you see to the right is now officially more popular than the group Nickelback according to FaceBook.

As of this post, the pickle has 1,504,800 friends while Nickelback only has 1,425, 294 friends.

In addition to being more popular than Nickelback, the pickle has angered the group. Nickelback’s lead singer Chad Kroeger posted a message on his FaceBook page recently that said: “Your page will be closing in two weeks”.

Even if that happens, everyone will always remember that a random pickle online managed to become more popular than Nickelback!

You know its coming….that tightness in your chest….unable to clear your throat, lump in the back of your throat….Yeah baby, the FULL on Winter cold….Started last Thursday.  By Friday I was taking vitamin C and drinking lots of water.  By Saturday, bed.  Sunday.  Just about dead.  Monday-to the doctors where I proceeded to cough up hairballs, lungs, my ribs….Diagnosis.  Upper Respiratory Infection and Bronchitis.  I was down for the count.  I missed work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Today I am here, for how long i don’t know.  My stomache and back muscles are sore from coughing….ugh.  Hate being sick.   The good news is I haven’t had a cigarette since Saturday.  And, I do’t planning on having another ever again.  Wine is a different story altogether.

Been watching the Olympics?  Crazy how you can watch it live on Canadian TV and then on US TV its packaged, promoted and aired during primetime????

Snowstorm on the way….Buffalonians say ‘Bring It!’  they aren’t scared.

Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer won his second gold medal yesterday. But shortly after that, it was taken away.

Sven changed lanes at a point in the race when he shouldn’t have. And his coach is the one who accidentally told him to do it.

Here’s the complete story.

Chances are, even if you don’t follow speed skating, you’re probably familiar with Sven Kramer thanks to an interview he did last week with NBC. This will make you feel a little less sorry for him…

Granted, it was kind of crazy for the reporter to start the interview like that minutes after he won his first Olympic gold medal. But he still could have been nicer about it.

UPDATE 2-25: Good luck finding the video online now – the Olympic Committee has now pulled it from just about everywhere.

If you missed the concert yesterday, here’s two of my favorite parts.

I love when the group banters between the songs. Here they talk about their daily special. Then later they talked about a sign at the Hard Rock Cafe and how it reminded them of a show they did with Michael Jackson…

I’m still learning how to use my Flip camera – I’ll get better as time goes by. But the audio is amazing! And since I’m in radio, that’s really all that matters.

Here’s the Barenaked Ladies’ Gold Medal Olympic rap from this past weekend in Toronto…

BNL video from earlier today at the Niagara Falls, US Hard Rock Cafe can be seen here eventually.

I love how they were so obsessed with losing the perfect orange when crossing the border today (fruit isn’t allowed to cross the border and Kevin Hearn was truly distraught over this). That orange must have come up at least four times during the concert earlier today – too funny!

Certainly a Hockey Game for the ages, especially for Buffalo/USA Hockey fans!  Ryan Miller has now shown the WORLD what Sabres Fans already knew, a world-class MVP Goalie!  I know this isn’t even the Gold Medal Round but everybody around here is going around like “we’ve won the Stanley Cup” at least for today after the USA win over Canada.  Don’t you really miss Chris Drury (on the Sabres) who also played like a real winner for Team USA?

The Ratings are just in and the GAME is now the most watched sporting event in Canadian history and the 2nd highest rated program in MSNBC history (behind the Barack Obama/Hillary Clinton debate from February 2008)!

Were you wondering why Ryan wears #39 at the Olympics and #30 on the Sabres?  He wore #39 when he played at Michigan State and while another #39 used to play in Buffalo (Dominic Hasek) he thought it might not be a good idea to wear the same number on the Sabres.

4 of Travel and Leisure Magazines Ugliest Airports are in the U.S.     Many Buffalonian’s have flown through at least two of them.

I can’t say that I agree with all on the list…but with JFK…definitely!

Since the kids started school, we are really stuck as to when we can take vacations outside of summer break. We love to go to Florida mid-Winter to spend some time with my parents in the Sarasota area, but the last few years have been pretty cool the second week in February.

This year gave “cool” new meaning: below-freezing temps, and cold, gray, very Buffalo-like conditions for the first half of our visit!

Thankfully, we got a couple of nice days at the end to hit the beach, and the pool, and get some color. But regardless of the weather, it was nice to get away.

It is instinctual to want to feel sunlight on your face. We need it. When we don’t have it, feelings of lethargy and fatigue take over. I know a lot of depressed people this time of year in the North, and I honestly don’t know how anyone could handle Alaska’s constant dark days. Even in the colder weather, to see a clear, blue sunny sky down there was enough to recharge my batteries. And though we were stuck inside much of the time, I did learn a few things.

Did you know:

Before Prohibition, there was no such thing as a mixed drink. Before Prohibition hit in the 20s and 30s, people would go to a bar or saloon and order whiskey, beer, wine, whatever they had in bottles. When alcohol was outlawed, people started making their own, and a lot of it tasted so bad- even poisonous – that bar owners masked the taste with fruit juices and soda, and the “cocktail” was born. (Thanks, History Channel!)

The stingray is closely related to the shark, with the exact same skin. We were able to touch some stingrays at the Tampa Aquarium, on one of several rainy cold afternoons. It was a very interesting experience. Rays were amazingly friendly, swimming right up and putting their heads above the water! The kids loved it.

A little frost, as long as it’s not too severe, actually makes oranges and grapefruits sweeter. We were able to taste for ourselves from an actual grapefruit tree in my parent’s neighborhood. A tasty way to start the morning.

I actually saw Floridians in winter parkas making “snow angels” in the beach sand. We were in shorts and t-shirts at the time, and it was sunny and almost 60.

As much as I like wine, there is nothing better than a frosty mug of Dos Equis when you’re eating Mexican food. Heather and I had a great lunch at Restaurante Tequilas in Palmetto, and it was just what the doctor ordered.

And lastly, even with cold weather, to be able to get away from Buffalo to Florida in February is a great thing.

We will be back mooching on you next year too, Mom and Dad!

I love the new Bryan Adams / Nelly Furtado 2010 Winter Olympics song “Bang The Drum”. Unfortunately, the only way to get it is by buying the full Sounds Of Vancouver 2010 album (online or CD)…

One of the other songs of this Olympics is Nikki Yanofsky’s amazing “I Believe” (the official 2010 Winter Olympics theme). You can get this one as a single online (it’s not on the Sounds Of Vancouver album)…

Also, visit the CTV website for a list of the music they’re using in their network promos.

The Olympic sports of luge and skeleton are similar. But luge is seen far more often than skeleton – probably because it’s been a part of the Olympics longer, which results in more established athletes.

There are some major differences between the two sports (one very obvious and some not so much).

Amanda Bird of the US Bobsled & Skeleton Federation is in Vancouver helping the athletes prepare for the Olympics and the barrage of media attention they’re about to get. She came on Star 102.5 shortly before the skeleton runs began tonight and explained the sport of skeleton.

She also talked about where the runs will start from on the course and which athletes we should watch for.

For even more information on the starting position for the skeleton athletes, read a February 15th New York Times article about this.

Here’s the full four-minute interview.

And watch the skeleton runs tonight. The two women’s runs begin at 7:00pm followed by the two men’s runs at 9:30pm (portions will air between 12:35am – 2:00am tonight on NBC – hopefully it’ll air earlier on CTV). Runs 3 & 4 are tomorrow at 6:45pm for the women and 9:20pm for the men.

Click here for Adam Benigni’s fine report on the curling challenge between the Rob Lucas Morning Show and Ch 2’s daybreak.   We all have a new respect for curling, and curlers!  If you thought we looked sloppy on the video, you should have seen the outtakes!  Thanks to my teammates Producer Nikki Gawel, and Traffic Guy Justin Swain.  Nikki was the smoothest curler (leave it to a woman), and Justin nailed the winning shot in OT!
