Even with all the cable channels and DVD releases, a bunch of great 80’s TV shows still remain unseen. But soon, some of the best will be coming to DVD…

Tales From The Darkside: Season 1 will finally be released February 10th. I consider this series equally as good as The Twilight Zone. I watched all four seasons when they originally aired and can’t wait to see them all again. Especially some of the fun ones from season one like “Djinn, No Chaser”, “The Madness Room”, “The Tear Collector” “The False Prophet”, “In The Cards”, and “Snip, Snip”.

Friday The 13th – The Series: Season 1 was released a few months ago. That’s the season that had my absolute favorite episode of the series – The Quilt Of Hathor. It was a two-parter where they had to track down a cursed object in an Amish-like community. Season 2 also had some great episodes, including one with a cursed radio (“And Now The News”)! The 2nd season comes out February 10th. I’m guessing the 3rd and final season won’t be too far behind.

Mr. Belvedere: It ran for six seasons and rarely gets rerun anymore. But that won’t matter now that seasons 1 & 2 will be out on DVD March 17th. If it sells well, maybe the releases will continue and I’ll finally get to see the ten episodes from the final season that never aired. Life would be very good then. Amazon doesn’t have it listed yet, but here’s a look at the package art.

California Dreams: I know this wasn’t an 80’s show, but it was close. I don’t care what anyone says, this show was way better than Saved By The Bell. It debuted in 1992 and lasted 78 episodes. You can see the first 31 very soon – seasons 1 & 2 are coming to DVD March 31st. Amazon doesn’t have this listed yet, but here’s the package art.

Most places drop a traditional New Year’s Eve ball tomorrow night. But Pennsylvania is never normal and they’ll prove that many times over tomorrow night.

Here’s some of the strange things that will be dropping tomorrow night in Pennsylvania cities…

Dillsburg, PA: A pickle.

Mechanicsburg, PA: A wrench.

Harrisburg, PA: A giant strawberry.

Elizabethtown, PA: A huge M&M.

Bethlehem, PA: A 25-pound fiberglass illuminated “marshmallow” Peep.

Shippensburg, PA: An anchor.

Falmouth, PA: A stuffed goat.

Lebanon, PA: A 120-pound, seven-and-a-half foot edible bologna!

Best Moment of 2008

After just completing a debacle of a Bills season (found out two minutes ago that Dick Jauron will be retained…Happy Happy Joy Joy), putting up with some pretty harsh weather, seeing our 401k’s and retirement accounts melt before our eyes (I hope we all have time to watch them come back), our state government start taxing us for drinking non-diet beverages, our gas prices be the highest in the continental United States, and have everyone that has a job just be happy to have it, no matter that they are doing 3x the work for the same salary (or even less), I thought we would end the year on a high note.

To me sports is synonymous with hope. No matter how bad you are, there is always next year. Last place, or first place, you always look ahead…and hope. With that, click here to watch not only the best local sports story of the year, but one of the most natural, moving moments, sporting or otherwise.

Zamboni Accident

Much like the did here in Buffalo, they are getting Wrigley Field ready for the Ice Bowl.
One glitch…the brakes on the Zamboni failed as they were unloading it. Too me, it looks like the planking they used to drive it onto wasn’t settled correctly. Watch it here.

I’m probably eating banana cream pie right this very second.

I hope you are too…

This will be a relatively quiet Christmas in the Demay House. My parents are down in Florida this year, conserving their strength from a pretty harsh year health-wise. My brother is visiting with them, and my other brother is spending the holiday with his wife’s family.

So it’s just our little nuclear family until late Christmas Day when my mother-in-law arrives. In the spirit of the season, I will refrain from any snarky MIL comments. Instead, I will share some interesting Christmas trivia that I talked about on the air this week:

Did You Know….

The “Twelve Days of Christmas” was originally written to help Catholic children in England remember different articles of faith during their persecution by Protestant Monarchs. It was a sort of code to preserve their faith. The “true love” represented God, and the gifts all represented different Catholic ideas: The “Partridge in a pear tree” was Christ.

  • 2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments
  • 3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity
  • 4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels
  • 5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament
  • 6 Geese A-laying = the six days of Creation
  • 7 Swans A-swimming = the seven sacraments
  • 8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes
  • 9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
  • 10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments
  • 11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles
  • 12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed

Christmas Traditions
- Through the ages a spider web found on Christmas morning is believed to bring good luck

- During World War II it was necessary for Americans to mail Christmas gifts early for the troops in Europe to receive them in time. Merchants joined in the effort to remind the public to shop and mail early, and lo – the extended shopping season has been with us ever since.

- An average household in America will mail out 28 Christmas cards each year and see 28 eight cards return in their place. How many did you send and receive?

- After “A Christmas Carol” Charles Dickens wrote one Christmas story each year for several years, but none were as successful as the original.

Merry Christmas from our house to yours!

Here’s one of our huge requests on Star 102.5. It’s Lou Monte’s Dominick The Donkey set to video from the Shrek movies.

Just as exciting, the awesome Crazy Frog with Jingle Bells (from the Crazy Frog CD Crazy Christmas Hits).

On that same CD is a remake of Wham’s Last Christmas! Here’s the video for that one.

Finally, the original Last Christmas and the 1984 video from Wham.

Merry Christmas!

This is strange. And I’m thinking the people that put this together are stranger still!

You know the “ding” a microwave makes when it’s done cooking? Imagine putting together a bunch of different microwaves with different “dings” and timing them just perfect so that they sing out Jingle Bells.

A group of people actually did just that and it’s already been watched by over half a million people. See the unbelievable excitement here

Neat Thoughts From Charles Schulz

The following was the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read theml straight through and you’ll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?
The point is none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.
These are no second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields.
But the applause dies..
Awards tarnish.
Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?
The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials..
The most money…or the most awards.
They simply are the ones who care the most.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life, like I did.
“Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia !”

”Be Yourself. Everyone Else Is Taken!’

I can’t remember exactly when I started having my doubts about Santa, but I distinctly remember it wasn’t my parents’ doing. Kids on my block broke it to me, and they weren’t nice about it, as I recall. I’m sure everyone has a similar experience, when suddenly the magic is gone, and we are less for it, somehow. That’s one of the reasons being a parent is so special: we get to be a part of the Christmas magic again.

My son takes his letter to Santa very seriously every year. He worked especially hard on this year’s, since he can actually read and write quite adequately now. As a matter of fact, when we visited the “North Pole Post Office” in Hamburg, at the Holiday Lights Festival, Connor made sure to mention his “real” letter, which he plans to leave for Santa by the cookies, milk, and carrots (for Rudolph and the other reindeer) Christmas Eve.

My daughter, meanwhile, is less specific in her letter. In her own kindergarten language she wrote that she would really like to hug Santa, kiss him, and eat with him sometime.
Speaking of the Holiday Lights Festival, apparently it’s really caught on; it took almost an hour in line just to get in! Under normal circumstances, this would have resulted in my turning the car around in a huff, giving my patented “I’m not waiting in a line like THIS” speech. But you know what? The kids were excited, they wanted to see real reindeer, they wanted to pick their favorite light display, and perhaps most of all: they wanted popcorn.
So we listened to Christmas music on the radio, waited our turn, and did just that.
I don’t know how much longer this innocence will last, but I’m cherishing it for now. There will be plenty of time to be jaded and unbelieving later. Once the magic is lost, it’s nearly impossible to get it back. Just ask Adam and Eve. That whole “tree of knowledge” thing wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.
Here’s to Christmas, through the eyes of a child.

In honor of Gina and Rob’s Christmas song / nightmare coming up tomorrow morning at about 8:40am, I thought I’d post some animal videos.

First up is a lazy cat that finally does something for its owner.

The second video might be proof that dogs are smarter than humans. Especially some humans I saw while Christmas shopping this past weekend.

In another cat video, see what what happens when you let your cat watch too much TV. It’s scary, but it’s nothing compared to the next video.

Get ready for the Ninja Cat. He will will get you when you’re not looking. And you won’t even know what’s coming.

By the way, if you love animals, I sure hope you have the 2009 Star 102.5 SPCA Calendar! If not, find out where to get it here.

Even though The SABRES season has been “up and down” this year it’s nice to know that Thomas Vanek’s season has been WAY UP! Saturday night’s 2 goals against the NJ Devils have made #26 the NHL’s Leading Scorer by a nice margin (he’s posted 24 goals so far)…keep up the GREAT work Thomas!
