Cinco Demay-o

Posted in: Holidays

In honor of Cinco de Mayo on Monday (or as I like to refer to it, Cinco Demay-o), I found a new study which says: the type of Mexican food you like best indicates what personality you have. Taste and personality reside in the same part of the brain, according to the study’s author, so listen up:

If you love Tacos – you are conscientious and a perfectionist. You are most romantically compatible with quesadilla lovers.

If you love Quesadillas
– you are dependable, a true friend, and more a follower than a leader.

If you can’t get enough Chips and Salsa (that’s me!) – you are competitive, ambitious, and a natural leader. Chips and salsa lovers are most romantically compatible with other chips and salsa lovers.

And if you love Burritos – you are dramatic, flirtatious, gregarious, and witty, and you get along with everyone.

So there you go! Find your appropriate partner, and have some fun Monday during Cinco Demay-o!

Wag The Dog:
New research indicates that a wagging tail doesn’t always mean your dog is happy. Researchers videotaped hundreds of dogs and were able to determine when they were actually happy and when they weren’t by measuring the angle of the wag on each animal. The study concluded if the tail wags more toward the dog’s left side, he’s not so pleased about what he sees. On the right side, he’s happy.

In honor of this useless study, a pic of my cute little dog Rocky, whose tail is often seen wagging vigorously.

Can you tell the difference between a Ding Dong and a Ring Ding? Or a Chocodile and a Zebra Cake?

Take the Snack Cake Quiz and see how well you do. I love them all and was doing great until the last few questions. I ended up with 13 out of 20.

The other night I woke up at 4am from a sound sleep and my heart was racing. Pounding in my chest. 150 beats a minute. And for some reason I couldn’t make it stop. I’ve been pretty stressed lately, and I fell asleep feeling really unsettled that evening. Since I’m not in my 20s anymore, I went in to the doctor and had my very first EKG. My blood pressure was a little high, and my doctor wanted to be sure there wasn’t anything else going on.

If you’ve ever seen The 40 year old Virgin, I felt like Steve Carell, because they had to shave me in places to get the leads to attach; so now I have little round bald areas on my chest! It’s weird. (See above picture for reference, except I’m not as hairy as Steve…)

Anyway, my EKG is fine, but my advice to you if you’re under stress: find yourself an outlet. Exercise. Talk to someone. Because ignoring it or not dealing with stress is not good. Doctor’s orders.

Congrats to #29 JASON POMINVILLE for being selected as a finalist for
this year’s NHL LADY BYNG MEMORIAL TROPHY (given each year to the player that best exhibits sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined
with a high standard of playing ability)! This year Jason, Detroit’s PAVEL DATSYUK, and Tampa Bay’s MARTIN ST. LOUIS are all finalists for the Trophy that will be voted on by the Hockey Writers Association and the Winner will be announced at the NHL’s AWARDS SHOW in Toronto on June 12. The Only SABRE to have ever won The Lady Byng before is
(my favorite Player of All-Time…Retired #11) GILBERT PERREAULT back in 1973.
BEST OF LUCK JASON…and just think if #29 WINS the POPULATION
OF POMINVILLE will go up BIG TIME!

It’s real.

It’s possibly still out there somewhere as it managed to escape captivity.

And it’s a warning sign that we’ve got some serious environmental problems.

See video of the three-headed frog here.

Famous Daves Self Tanning

This weekend we went to a birthday party in Bradford, PA for my niece and nephew Mackenzie and Jared (By mentioning them in the opening line, I am hopefully once again their favorite Uncle. You know how that goes. Plus they don’t even know what blogs are yet!).
Anyway, to the point:

My sister in law had a really good tan, not overly dark, but noticeable. She lives in Hornell, so we knew she wasn’t out in the sun any more than us in Buffalo. When we asked her if she tanned she told us about her success with Famous Daves Self Tanning. She had heard about it from a friend, and got some on E-BAY. It looked great, and best yet, didn’t have any smell/aroma that many spray on, or tanning creams have. My wife checked it out on the web, and between the website and our sister in law’s recommendation, ordered some. Here’s the site

For those who want a tan, but aren’t fond of tanning booth’s, this might be the remedy!
Let me know how it goes in your quest to get rid of Northeastern pasty white winter skin!

The new host of The Mole was announced recently and it’ll be Jon Kelley, who’s been the weekend co-anchor of the TV news show Extra.

I’ve never heard of him before, but the producers say his style will be similar to Anderson Cooper’s.

We’ll see soon. The new season of The Mole will begin May 26th on ABC and then air regularly Monday nights at 10pm.

If you just can’t wait for something mole-ish, go check out season one on DVD. An unaired extended scene of one of the strangest moments from season one where Kathryn passes out from stress & fear is featured as one of the extras.

Or go hear an interview I did with Bill McDaniel (the Mole from the second season) on my audio page. Then buy Bill’s book. Season two isn’t out on DVD, but reading his book is actually just as entertaining. It’s like watching season two with continuous commentary from the Mole.

Just in time for summer – a popsicle made from real pickle juice!!!

According to the Pickle Sickle website, 100% of the pickle is used to make the popsicle. And it’s a healthy treat!

The only way this could possibly be more exciting is if I had one here with me right now.

If you should run across one in the area, let me know so I can tell everyone where to go to try it!

There’s a new online series that follows the Survivor castaways after they’ve been voted off the island.

Apparently, the place they go is Ponderosa (whatever that is).

The first two-minute episode features Eliza, who was voted off last week, as she prepares to become the first jury member.

Each week, an additional castaway will join her at Ponderosa and there will be a new episode.

See it free at the CBS website.

I always get a little “giddy” this time of year (just like STEVE MARTIN did in the Movie “THE JERK” when the new PHONEBOOK came out) as the official BUFFALO BILLS Schedule is released. Already there is “controversy” about the BILLS/DOLPHINS game in TORONTO on Sunday December 7th…hard core Bills fans crying foul because the “home field advantage” (especially Buffalo’s WINTER conditions) will be taken away because the game will played under the Dome of THE ROGERS CENTER. It is “cool” The Bills will host the BROWNS on MONDAY NIGHT November 17th at The Ralph. If you missed it, here’s the full schedule:

Last week, I ran across some promo CD’s at the station for Ben Jelen. Then I saw the incredible video for Where Do You Go. And then coincidentally, he was in town this past weekend. So me and one of my friends (Kathy) went downtown to the concert.

What an incredible performance! This was easily one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to (rivaling even Depeche Mode). Not only can Ben hit all the notes of his songs (that in itself is rare at any concert), but he’s also amazing on keyboards, guitars & violin and had an equally talented backup band. Kathy had never heard of him before this, but she’s definitely now a fan and plans to see him again the next time he’s in Buffalo.

Check out Ben Jelen’s recent CD “Ex-Sensitive”. My favorites on it are Pulse, Where Do We Go, Just A Little and Wreckage.

You’ll especially love it if you were a fan of the 90’s band 4 Non Blondes. Linda Perry, the former lead singer of that group, produced this album and you can definitely hear her influence throughout it.

There’s another incredible concert making it’s way across the US soon and I really want to see it. It’s the retro 80’s Regeneration Tour featuring The Human League, Belinda Carlisle, ABC, Dead Or Alive, A Flock Of Seagulls, and Naked Eyes!

As of now, the closest and easiest tour venue to get to would be in Trenton, NJ on August 21st (Trenton’s about seven hours from Buffalo). Hopefully, something closer will be announced soon.

I would love to see Human League and Belinda Carlisle – those two alone are worth the price of admission!

As for some of the other groups, Naked Eyes and A Flock Of Seagulls will only have the original lead singer at the concert, so it’s kind of like two new groups in a way. (With Naked Eyes, keyboardist Rob Fisher passed away about nine years ago following complications from a stomach surgery. With A Flock Of Seagulls, all the other members have retired from music.)

Overall, it sounds like a good concert. Keep checking the official website for additional dates. I know I will be!

Finally, Bryan Adams is coming to the Town Ballroom downtown May 7th. Keep listening to Star 102.5 all week for your chance to win tickets. Or just click on the picture to buy tickets.

Last Word On The Sabres…I hope!

For most of the season I’ve been pretty up front regarding my feeling for the Sabres organizational problems. Numerous times I’ve said:

Don’t blame Darcy Regier. He’s taken far too many bullets for Thomas Golisano and don’t be surprised if he’s had enough and doesn’t sign a new contract after 2008–09.

And don’t blame Larry Quinn. No one one wants to win more than he does. He hates to lose, and is known for having a big ego. I think that is great! He’s the type of guy we should be happy to have fighting for progress downtown. He would sign every player if he could.

DO BLAME IT ON THOMAS GOLISANO.

In short, he is trying to run the Sabres like Paychex. His not being available to comment on, or handle negative situations, his letting Larry and Darcy take the bullets, his general blase attitude toward the past 18 months speaks volumes about his goals. It’s been a 180 degree turnaround over the past two years.

Want more proof? Check out this recent article from The Hockey News. They ranked NHL GM’s from top to bottom. Here’s what they said about Darcy.

15. Darcy Regier, Buffalo

How can we rate Regier so highly when he has: a) failed to come to terms with his team’s three best players?; b) let two of them get away and got nothing in return?; c) traded his best defenseman while his team was fighting for a playoff spot?; d) dismantled one of the best scouting staffs in the league?; and, e) has presided over the Sabres as they’ve gone from Stanley Cup contender to barely middle-of-the-pack? Because he’s taking the bullet for an owner (Thomas Golisano) who refuses to spend money despite the fact the Sabres have essentially sold out every game the past two seasons and have gone on long, lucrative playoff runs. Regier is a good hockey man and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave at the first opportunity. CAREER 390-299-120 (.556) CUPS 0 PLAYOFFS 10-6 series record

In the end of regular season HOCKEY NEWS Power Rankings, the Sabres are at #20, and they write:

This is Derek Roy’s team and he deserves to be named captain. Enough of this minor peewee crap of rotating captains. Hard to say what we can expect from the Sabres moving forward. The one thing we do know is they won’t pay to keep their stars. That is not a good thing and certainly isn’t fair to coach Lindy Ruff and GM Darcy Regier.

Is there anyone we can get to buy this team from Tommy Boy?

Music videos for the most part have been dull and boring for quite a few years now. It’s like musicians put them together as an afterthought lately.

I don’t think anything could ever top the awesomeness that is the Take On Me video from a-ha (even without sound, it’s amazing). But this recent video from Ben Jelen sure comes close.

The song is called Where Do We Go and the video is just strange – I absolutely love it.

It’s the story of someone who will do just about anything to get attention – at least that’s my interpretation of it. The lyrics of the song are actually about a relationship gone wrong. Click on the screencap to see for yourself and then let me know what you think.

Hilarious Airline Delay Video

I’ve been traveling a lot lately, and maybe you’ve heard some of my “running through the airport in Detroit/Phoenix”or “lost baggage (or as Delta calls it, delayed baggage) stories. After surfing the web for airline gossip sites (yes I have too much free time), I came across this very funny video account of a 7 hour Tarmac delay. And guess what, it’s a Delta flight bound for JFK! I’ve heard too many horror stories about that combination of airline and airport lately!

For my birthday last week, Heather bought me a basketball hoop and backboard set. I used to play all the way through high school, and now that the weather is warmer I was excited to get back out there – so we decided to put it together on Sunday. Let me just say, it was one of the most frustrating projects of my life! I figured, put a few posts together, attach the backboard and rim, stick it into the base, nothing but net, right? Well……4 hours later, I was just about ready to set it on fire. The driveway was a sea of cardboard and clear plastic bags of bolts and screws and plastic pieces that didn’t go to anything. I’m convinced the instructions were written by someone who doesn’t know english.

To put things in perspective, I have put computers together, my wife and I have assembled Ikea furniture, but this simple basketball hoop was unbelievably complex. We had to improvise a few steps just to get the darn thing up! Thankfully, at the end of the day, with about an hour of sunshine left, the Demay family was shooting hoops together, no thanks to “Lifetime Sports.” Caveat Emptor!

Now, for your reading enjoyment, some other stuff I talked about on the air:

  • New research shows that two fatty acids found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines, perform as well or better than prescription strength drugs at relieving lower back pain. The University of Pittsburgh found that 68% of patients who took fish oil capsules daily found so much relief they were able to discontinue the use of costly prescription painkillers – with no side effects, and a side benefit of helping the heart.
  • Nobody likes to throw up, but it happens, and you can usually feel it coming on. So what can you do to keep from throwing up? Believe it or not, there’s a way to make yourself feel better. Take a look at your wrist. There is a line in your skin called a wrist crease, and if you go up 2 inches on your forearm and massage that area right between the tendons, you can relieve mild symptoms of nausea. Rub that area of your arm for two minutes, then switch to the other arm, and you’ll be amazed how much better your stomach will feel.

I wish I had known that last fact earlier, because Connor threw up in my backseat on Monday! Poor little guy. As is often the case, however, he immediately felt better afterward, and went back to school the next day.

See you on the radio,

–Brian
