Well The BILLS are done (and Marv Levy too) and now that 2008 is here let me wish you all
a very happy, healthy, and prosperous new year and, as always, thanks for listening to STAR 102.5!

“Feel It Again” (from the album pictured to the left) is one of my all-time favorite songs. And the 80’s group that did it is not only still together, but they’re also part of a free concert New Year’s Eve in Niagara Falls.

Honeymoon Suite, along with Dennis DeYoung (the former lead singer of Styx) and Loverboy will perform Monday night at 8pm at Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls.

It’s part of the Winter Festival of Lights and yes, it’s totally free! Get all the details here.

The 80’s are back on Star 102.5!

Every time I play this song by Peter Schilling, I get bombarded with questions about it.

It’s a sequel to David Bowie’s “Major Tom” and “Ashes To Ashes”. We finally learn the fate of Major Tom here.

Check out the video on YouTube. And to buy the song, get “Living In Oblivion – Volume 5“, one of the greatest collections of 80’s music on CD. It’s out of print, but should be easy to find either online or in the used section of most music stores.

A strange thing happened in the Demay house Christmas morning. My son Connor left a very cute note for Santa, along with two cookies. I put the note and the cookies by the fireplace Christmas Eve, and went to bed. Christmas morning, when I came downstairs to put on my coat and boots to let the dog out, I looked at Connor’s note – and the cookies were gone!

I was the last to go to bed Christmas Eve, and the first to get up Christmas morning – where did Santa’s cookies go? For a second, I was filled with wonder and the spirit of Christmas; then I saw my dog Rocky with cookie crumbs all over his snout.
Anyway, I hope you got everything you wanted for Christmas. Happy Holidays!

CLAPTON – THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Happy Christmas Eve Morning!

I hope you get everything you want this Christmas, and more importantly are able to give all you want! If you do get a gift card to a book store, I have a recommendation: CLAPTON The Autobiography. It came out earlier this year, and at first glance I can see why it got such good reviews.

Even those who only have a mild interest in ERIC CLAPTON, but a strong interest in music will devour this book. It is strongly written and edited. Eric gives you the full scope of his upbringing and life, without getting too hung up on any one area. And what a life it was, from his late teens and seeing his first CLAPTON IS GOD banners at shows, through is drug abuse and re-birth in the post CLAPTON UNPLUGGED years. His love affair with George Harrison’s wife, the super-groups (CREAM, DEREK, BLIND FAITH), the death of his son…it’s all here.

There are 2 chapters late in the book that are worth the price alone. In one 3 1/2 year period starting in ‘87 he: Started final sobriety by falling to his knees and praying for help from his alcohol and drug demons (it worked); saw his agent, 2 roadies, and friend Stevie Ray Vaughn killed in a helicopter accident after a show; met a girl he fell in love with, took her to see a Rolling Stones show, told Mick “stay away from this one, I really like her,” only to find Mick having an affair with her three weeks later; and finally after re-discovering his relationship with his son Conor, having him die after falling out of a window in a New York City apartment building. Clapton’s story telling in these sections, and the whole book, is gripping, though nothing is sensationalised. In fact you feel exactly what he was going through at those times, as much of it comes from his personal diaries.

I’m not a huge Clapton fan, but have become a bigger, more respectful one over the years. But fan or not, this is one great book. Oh and the nickname “Slowhand”; It has to do with breaking guitar strings and how long it took him to re-string…not how he played!

Just too much of a running game by The Giants for the Bills…it was a great start but not much of a finish for the Team on Sunday. I’m sure the Bills meeting with Kevin Everett gave them the big emotional boost at the start (2 TD’s on 2 possessions) but they couldn’t sustain it for the entire game. Still, kudos to Marshawn Lynch for rushing for over 1,000 yards in his rookie season (no small feat…but with Marv spending the big bucks on the offensive line in the off season it really paid off…in more ways than one). It’s on to Philly for a meaningless game, but it would be nice to go 8-8 for the year (especially with all the injuries).

It’s time to get ready for the ICE BOWL…or I should say the Amp Energy WINTER CLASSIC (I don’t want to get served with a Cease and Desist like Mark Corsi of Poster Art USA for printing that COOL “Ice Bowl” merchandise)!

Let’s Go BUFFALO!

This will scare you.

Check out this classic Christmas clip from the Arsenio Hall Show. Arsenio actually raps along with the New Kids On The Block on “Funky, Funky Christmas” from a 1989 episode of the show.

The reason I put this up – there’s been one request I just couldn’t find this year. “New Kids Got Run Over By A Reindeer”, a parody that our station used to play in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I’ve got it on reel-to-reel tape, but the quality is terrible and can’t be aired. Maybe by next Christmas I’ll find a better copy.

Long before then, if you love stuff like this from the 80’s, don’t forget to listen to the all request 80’s At 8. It returns Wednesday night on Star 102.5!!!

Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile, but I’ve been swamped with off-air work lately.

Anyways, MJ in our Traffic Department (one of the people who bring you the commercials you hear on some of our stations) told me about this YouTube video her and her daughter have been watching.

If you’re a fan of the song “Dominick The Christmas Donkey”, you’re going to love this. It’s holiday lights in sync to the song!

I suppose you could have called it the SNOW BOWL, but Sunday The Browns were more prepared than The Bills in the 8-0 shut-out! Still, The Bills “D” didn’t allow a TD and the 4th quarter drive looked like it might have been another Christmas Miracle, but not scoring in the biggest game for the Team in years hurts. Even though the last two games don’t mean much, and after all the early season injuries, it’s still amazing The Bills did as well as they’ve done this season (kudos Coach Jauron).

Now let’s get ready for THE ICE BOWL!

Go SABRES!!

The amount of snow we got this weekend would undoubtedly have shut down the state of Virginia for a week. The Governor would have declared a state of emergency. My former radio station would have gone full-on “SnowWatch” mode, with wall-to-wall closings and cancellation info.

Here in Western New York, there isn’t a single school closing to report at the moment. We knew snow was coming, we prepared for it, we dealt with it, life continues unabated. Southerners, take note: you can actually have fun when it snows!

Back to work tomorrow,

Last December, after we set a record for donations at my first Radiothon, I thought “Man, it’s going to be tough to follow this next year!”

Now, after exceeding last year’s total by over $40,000, I’m thinking the same thing about Radiothon 2009! The generosity of Western New York never ceases to amaze me.

In case you missed it:

  • Over $211,000 raised for the country’s best SPCA facility.
  • Over 140 animals adopted.

Wow!

Many many thanks to all who made this event such a tremendous success! We saved a lot of animals this year.

As the BILLS “squished the fish” on Sunday, I can’t remember a more complete game by the Team this year! The “D” forcing 5 turnovers, 2 Bills running backs rushing over 100 yards,
yes Virginia TRENT EDWARDS can throw the “LONG BOMB,” and even though Coach Jauron did get a penalty for trying to throw the “challenge flag” when he had run out of chances-we’ll give you a “pass” on that one Dick! It’s been a while since the BILLS beat both The Jets and the Dolphins TWICE in the same season…and of course if the PATS weren’t as good as they are it would be a whole different ball game in the AFC East! I don’t have to tell you it will be a very meaningful game in Cleveland on Sunday (how many years has it been since that’s happened in December for the Bills)!

LET’S GO BUFFALO!!!

The Original Margaritaville
Sorry it’s been almost a month since my last update. Really didn’t think it had been that long, and it breaks my string of weekly updates. This update is one that Buffett fans (Jimmy, not Warren) will like.

While going through some old photos on my pc, I came across some from Key West of Jimmy’s original, and still in use, studio. As you can see it is a non-descript white cement block building right on the docks. A few oddities about it: When he first opened it in the 70’s, there was NOTHING in that area of the docks, just a few local fisherman shanties and some places to tie up your boat. Now it is in the middle of where the tour boats depart, there are major restaurants and tourist traps nearby, and they’ve even put some paved roads in, as you can tell from the pics.
Also, it is said that 90% of the tourists walk around, over, and by the building (see the pic of people walking down the docks behind it) and never even know that they are near a legendary recording studio. Other than some heavy duty electrical boxes outside, there is absolutely no sign of it being a studio. There is a big KEEP OUT sign posted near the door. Jimmy rents out the studio frequently (Kenny Chesney had been there the week before tweaking some songs), and shows up himself with the whole band about once a year, usually late September. That’s when he takes his breather after the summer tour, figures out the financials, tips the roadies, and settles any matters with the band.

You should be able to make the photos bigger by clicking on them. Feel free to e-them to your friends and amaze them with your new found Buffett knowledge.

After earlier season losses at the LAST SECOND to DENVER and DALLAS it was nice to see
The BILLS win one in dramatic fashion! In the VERY EMOTIONAL game to honor the memory of The Redskins SEAN TAYLOR, give full kudos to 1) THE BILLS ‘D’, 2) RIAN LINDELL and 3) TRENT EDWARDS! If the Bills can “squish the fish” this weekend it would set up a REAL playoff-type game in CLEVELAND on December 16th (both teams could have identical records-providing The JETS beat The Browns this weekend…root for THE JETS).

I’m waiting for the BILLS/EAGLES game December 30th…if The Bills win it would mark a sweep of last year’s former teammates (beat RAVENS/Willis MacGahee, beat REDSKINS/London Fletcher, and EAGLES/Takeo Spikes)!

GO BILLS!!!
