Dad started me reading “The Classics” at an early age. I was too young to truly understand the deeper meaning in Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea, but I distinctly remember doing a book report on it in 3rd grade, and seeing Mrs. Schmidt’s puzzled expression when I turned it in. “You read ‘The Old Man And The Sea’ by Hemingway?” she asked. Yes, I replied, giving her a brief synopsis of the plot, which to Hemingway’s credit wasn’t too hard for a 3rd grader to follow, symbolism be damned; an old man caught a big fish!

About a week ago I finished The Torrents Of Spring, which I had never read before. The references to Northern Michigan drew me in, since I spent several years working in the Petoskey/Traverse City area, where Hemingway used to hunt and fish. City, town, and street names familiar to me flooded the pages, and I was struck once again by how the greatest artists always seem to be the most troubled. Given the fact that Hemingway was severely depressed much of his life, eventually killing himself, I often wonder what would have happened if he had been born 50 years later. Would he have just been diagnosed early on, prescribed an effective anti-depressant, and become something other than an author, not having the tempestuous brain chemistry to drive his art? God only knows.

In a nutshell, Torrents is a lively little narrative spoofing the style and techniques of several 1920s era authors, most of which I don’t know, Sherwood Anderson in particular. It’s a funny story, even without knowing the work being parodied, but I bet it would be even funnier if I did.

As I write this, my old blind dog Rocky is lying asleep at my feet. Inspired by the art of Hemingway, I give you my latest poem, “Running With A Blind Dog.”

Freedom awaits
Outside
Tethered freedom, at least
Almost like it was
Like you were
By the lake, in the clearing of your youth

Inside, your walk is tentative
Feeling the way
Around obstacles left
By younger, bigger pack members

Outside, new smells
A reason left to run
A reason to dart
Right
To stop right here
Trip me
Trap me in your discovery

Open mouth
And tongue ablaze
You lead
Your eyes sparkle
Only in memory

Who to hate on the Rangers

Every series has a villain. Someone on the other team you just detest, either because they are way too good, way too nice (other teams hate Briere in that way), or because they are idiots. Sean Avery is an idiot. A talented idiot, who made the Rangers better the day they got him. He plays like a Matthew Barnaby, but is not respected as he was because he starts fights then runs the other way. Click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B53W-7tk4Uw&mode=related&search and find out why. There are dozens of Avery lowlights to check out. The Sabres cannot be rattled by him, and more importantly score on any Power Plays they get because of his penalties.

If you read my April 9th BLOG The SABRES playoff series is shaping up nicely (beating The Isles, Rangers, Devils and DOMINIC in the CUP Finals…still NO JINXING here).

It was nice to see (almost a “crying moment”…but I would have done that anyway to keep my
eyes hydrated) Mike Greer of The SAN JOSE SHARKS last week after his Team eliminated NASHVILLE to advance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the camera followed him in the traditional shaking of hands (quickly and gingerly) with members of The Predators until he reached J.P. DUMONT of Nashville and they hugged (with real sincerity) and spoke for a while (of course both being last year’s SABRES). Nice to see former teammates still sort of like family.

Are the SABRES overshadowing the BILLS DRAFT this weekend (more on that upcoming)?

Ever wonder what it’s like to live the life of an American Idol contestant?

According to TMZ.com (and a document they found), there’s no days off for a potential Idol. Here’s what they go through every week…

THR: Pick out song & design the performance “look”.

FRI: Shop for clothing & accessories needed for performance.

SAT: One-on-one rehearsals with celebrity mentor.

SUN: Film weekly Ford video / commercial.

MON: Rehearsal.

TUES: Dress rehearsal & perform live.

WED: Results show, followed by goodbye dinner for losing contestant.

Cool Old School Sabres Article

Click this link http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=300182

for an article on the wacky 74-75 Sabres-Flyers Stanley Cup Finals. The hype over the Sabres then is just as it is now…maybe even bigger as it was the first time they had made it to the Finals, and sport was a little more innocent.

Big Brother, Real World, even Sanjaya singing on American Idol can’t top these insane clips of Mayor Byron Brown’s kid slamming into cars and not seeming to care.

WBEN’s Barbara Burns posted the video to Newsradio 930 WBEN’s website today, shortly after Buffalo’s Police Commissioner released them at a press conference.

Clip one is the crash itself (note the car is already damaged).

Clip two starts a little before clip one (with the car speeding by). About 90 seconds into this clip (after the car has been “parked”), the Mayor’s son saunters by as if nothing happened.

Pathetic…

There’s no one more STAR STRUCK than I am…once at a convention in Los Angeles I was with my brother at LAX airport and I would kid him every time someone would come down the
escalator that would look like a celebrity, I would tell him LOOK THAT’S CHER or THAT’S JOHNNY CARSON, until JOHNNY CARSON did in fact come down the escalator with his wife
on his way to Europe on vacation. It was like a “cry wolf” until JOHNNY got close enough for
my brother to confirm it WAS actually JOHNNY CARSON.

Yesterday while in FUDDRUCKERS (not a Shameless plug, although it COULD BE) I saw
BUFFALO BILLS Special Teams Ace STEVE TASKER (#89-and the ONLY Special Teams player and Buffalo Bill to be named MVP at a PRO BOWL) come in to dine! A few minutes later, to my surprise, BILLS/NFL HALL OF FAMER #12 JIM KELLY came (and JIM and STEVE weren’t dining together). I so wanted to go to the CASINO and bet number 89 or 12 on the Roulette table, but realized I DON’T BET!

By the way, FUDDRUCKERS is a great place to see STARS…I once dined 1 booth away from
SABRES #12 ALES KOTALIK just after he got back from the Olympics! Please let me know if there’s a place around town where you see celebrities…I’ll be there!

Long before American Idol, Simon made an appearance on the game show “Sale of the Century” (the overseas version, not the American one).

Watch a clip of his appearance here. As you’ll see, he was a bit obnoxious and overconfident even then.

Worst Contract in The NHL

When Rob Ray mentioned that Alexi Yashin was benched for the 2nd and 3rd periods of game two, he nailed it big time. His ice time total for the game was under 8 minutes. On that note check out his contract status, one of the gems that got former Isles GM Mike Milbury fired.

You can see Yashin’s and all other salaries via The Hockey News at: (may have to cut and paste)

http://www.forecaster.ca/hockeynews/hockey/_7irw6govkze9/extras.cgi?sal-east#NYI

On the same page, I mentioned that Jason Blake is the type of player who would really fit in well on the Sabres next year, providing he was available. Guess what? He will be unrestricted next year. One problem, he plays on the same wing as Thomas Vanek, and the price of having both would be about $6 million combined…way too much for two players in that same position, especially considering that Jochen Hecht is set to make over 2 Million next year. However, if either can make a switch to Right Wing, it could be do-able.

By the way has anyone seen Briere lately? Wondering if that leg bruise isn’t more than they are saying. He has been around the puck, but has been about the 8th best forward in the series so far. Game Three coming up Monday Night.. Listen to the morning show this week to find out why game 3 is the most important in any series.

Green Day…This Generation’s Clash?

MTV’s HD channel was recently added to the digital tier of Time Warner. It’s allowed me to catch a lot of their STORYTELLER series in a new way, Wide Screen, and in Hi Def. I’ve caught pieces of GREEN DAY’S BULLET IN A BIBLE concert video. It was recorded at their June 2005 two-night run at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England. Although not a huge Green Day fan, I was blown away by them. Makes me wish I would’ve seen them when their American Idiot tour came to Buffalo last summer. I was familiar with American Idiot, it certainly deserved all the Grammy’s it received, and may be the best Rock album of the past 5 years, certainly in the top 5.

But to see it come alive is another thing. As I watched them go from pop ballads and uptempo songs (Wake Me Up…Holiday) to harder angst ridden pieces (Jesus of Suburbia), they controlled the festival crowd with an energy I can only compare to mid 70’s early 80’s CLASH. In that aspect, I really don’t think we have anything else like GREEN DAY right now. U2 has gotten too big, too reverent and have simply graduated by age and experience away from that innocent edge to continue to hold the title. Same for Springsteen. We’re talking young, rebellious innocence, and those artists have passed the torch to Green Day. Or rather Green Day has taken it from them.

If you care about music at all, I strongly recommend you make time to catch BULLET IN A BIBLE on MTV HD. Better yet, go by the DVD. If you are a casual GREEN DAY fan, or even less, you will be amazed by the performance. Makes me wish I’d have been old enough to see The CLASH in their hey day. This may be as close as we get. What makes it even sweeter is that it’s from an American Band from California.

Warning…it does have some strong language in it’s lyrical content and between song banter. And Trey Cool’s facial expressions may get on your nerves after awhile.

Goodbye Haley Scarnato, last of the hotties on Idol. Sanjaya survives for another week. America, have you lost your mind?

Brett Hull thinks the Sabres have what it takes to go all the way. He predicts it will be Anaheim and Buffalo in the Stanley Cup Final, and I think he’s right. If he’s not, this city is going to be very depressed.

It’s the middle of April, and as I write this we’re getting more snow. No, I don’t regret moving here from Virginia one bit, but ENOUGH ALREADY!

One of the great things about moving into a new house is that your place is under warranty. At our 10 month checkup, a dry wall guy came in and fixed every crack, nail hole, and blemish in every room, even fixing some small imperfections in the ceiling. A plumber came down to the basement and installed a new sump – the old one wasn’t even broken. A window guy came in and made our screen door roll smoothly again. This week the painter and the roofer come by; it almost feels like having to buy all those appliances last year was worth it.

Every morning my daughter eats “Bek-west” and likes to watch Sponge Bob and “Pat-wick.” That’s just so cute I wanted to write it down.

And why do you suppose the sound of Tom Bergeron’s voice makes my skin crawl? Something about that guy forces me to turn the TV on mute whenever he’s on. Heather endures the sporadic silences as we watch “Dancing with the Stars” and shakes her head; he doesn’t affect her like he does me. It’s like Kramer in that Seinfeld episode where he has a fit whenever he hears Mary Hart’s voice, except instead of just one show, Tom hosts every damn ABC game show there is! He’s on every night, it seems! I’m doomed.

I could go on, but Rocky is anxiously pacing the floor. Out into the tundra we go.

Now that SABRES FEVER has taken firm hold of WNY my DREAM
matchups for the 1st STANLEY CUP for Buffalo would have been
beating TORONTO or MONTREAL in the first round, OTTAWA in the 2nd round, and NJ DEVILS to advance to beat DOMINIC HASEK and
The DETROIT RED WINGS. Now that Toronto and Montreal are OUT how about this DREAM scenario (that is VERY POSSIBLE)…SABRES BEAT ALL the NYC Area TEAMS…NY Islanders in the first round, NY Rangers in the 2nd round (if they beat ATLANTA the Sabres WOULD play the Rangers in the 2nd round), and NJ DEVILS for the EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS, then of course Dominic Hasek and The Detroit Red Wings to win the CUP (it’s your CINDERELLA story for the BUFFALO SABRES 1st STANLEY CUP)!

GO SABRES!!!

Congrats to the SABRES for clinching The Northeast Division AND EASTERN CONFERENCE
last night! If you didn’t know, the last time the Team won the EASTERN CONFERENCE was back in 79/80 when SCOTTY BOWMAN coached #22 LINDY RUFF! It’s interesting too that
last year’s Stanley Cup finalists CAROLINA and EDMONTON won’t make the playoffs this
year for the first time in NHL history that the previous year’s final two teams didn’t make the playoffs the following year !

Again…GO SABRES!!!

Got $150,000 burning a hole in your pocket? Then go buy Knight Rider’s KITT here!

Just don’t expect to be able to turbo boost over semis and rivers or have a conversation with the car – those days have long since passed.

And FYI, David Hasselhoff is not included. Knowing that, the price should probably be higher.
